Two trees, a beech and a birch, grew up in the forest together and spent many years donig what trees do especially when people aren't looking. One spring, after the snow melted, they noticed a small shoot growing between them. One tree asked the other, "Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?" This went on for several years because trees speak slowly and that's why we can't hear them. A woodpecker nesting nearby was asked by the trees to answer the question of the newcomer being a son of a beech or a son of a birch. The woodpecker investigated the matter and flew back up to report, "Neither, but it's the best piece of ash I ever put my pecker in!" |
